Embracing the Caucasus mountain range in the west of the former Soviet Union, Georgia opened up its borders to the West earlier than its neighbour Armenia, to the south. The capital city, Tblisi, showed evidence of corruption and crime. In the mid 1990's guns were commonplace.

The Bolnisi gold project, in the south of Georgia was the first deposit to receive attention from Australian entrepreneurs, but it failed to be successful in the long term.
