Country Experience: Indonesia
JSD has had extensive experience in the Indonesian archipelagoe, including Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Bali, Lombok, Subawa and Sulawesi.
Three projects, in particular, to which visits were made include:
Kelian was a relatively high production, open pit operation, situated in tropical, high rainfall relief and jungle conditions. It was not unlike Ok Tedi or Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. Local communities had to be catered for appropriately, and this Rio Tinto owned mine had local policies for assisting the indigenous Dayak people in the area.
Awak Mas was proposed to be similar type of operation, though its low grade eventually prevented its going ahead. Situated in northern Sulawesi, near the Minahassa Peninsula, the local Christian-based indigenous people were certainly a minority (like the Balinese) in an otherwise populous Moslem nation.
Field party on site...
A detailed feasibility study was prepared by Minproc engineers for a a joint venture involving Gasgoyne Gold NL and ACM Ltd.
Care needed to be taken with burial sites...
Eventually, ownership of the project passes to Sons of Gwalia Ltd, whom JSD continued to advise until the property was disposed of by Gwalia.
Road pioneering in steep terrain...
This project involved substantial on-site involvement, living in a rough exploration camp.
The third project, Ciemas, is a gold project in southern Java which was visited in connection with a financial transaction on the Singapore stock exchange. The transaction was approved by the exchange and a new company controlling the mine was created.
