Country Experience: South America

JSD has operated in Argentina and Uruguay.

In southern Argentina, the assignment was to investigate mining tenements adjacent to BHP Minerals (now BHP Billiton) Agua Rica copper deposit, high in the southern Andes.  The issue was that, if the mine were to go ahead, these tenements would be needed to accommodate open pit mine waste dumps.

Access to the area was by air to Catamarca from Buenos Aires.

In Uruguay, some Australian investors seeded a small Uruguayan exploration company which aimed to explore the auriferous Archaean greenstones, widespread across the country.  Access was gained from the port of Montevideo, across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires.

Inland from Montevideo, the estancias often carried outcropping, auriferous quartz reefs at surface.

Later, the company successfully acquired the San Gregorio gold plant and is currently a 60,000 oz/year gold producer.
