Country Experience: New Zealand

Middle Earth.  Land of the Long White Cloud.  Aoteoroa.  The Shaky Isles.  Whatever you choose to call it, JSD has been active in New Zealand for most of the last 12 years, apart from our adventure activities there which span the last three decades.

Recently, we have been involved in preliminary planning for the re-opening of the Reefton and Blackwater goldfields on the west coast of the South Island.

One of the interesting assignments involved an attempt at the recovery and dewatering of an old shaft at Waiuta, situated in an old mining (now heritage) area.

... headframe and winders set up over the old shaft collar

... view down the old shaft

... and with new steel sets and timber lagging

The job also called for a decline study, which involved locating the best portal position and decline path for an access tunnel 3.5 km in length to reach the gold reef at a depth of 850 metres.

The Southern Alps

A few shots taken during many climbing trips to the Southern Alps of NZ.

Firstly Mt Cook (Aoraki "the cloud piercer)

Next Mt Tasman, showing the ridge we descended as part of our traverse of the summit; and to the right, the old Sefton bivouac.
