Country Experience: Mongolia

During the 1990's the Mongolian government was offering various resource projects to international resources companies an an open or invited tender basis.  One of these was the Boroo gold project, located approximately 150 km NW of the capital Ulan Bataar.

It was proposed to develop a large open pit gold mine and associated infrastructure.  At the time of JSD's visit, hydraulic mining was being carried out by artisinal miners.

Riding horses on the Mongolian plains, drinking "arkhi" and mare's milk, dining in the traditional "gur" on boiled sheep.  An interesting cultural experience.  Here, well known resource geologist Dr John Chisholm demonstrates his prowess on the "horse violin".
